Jugband Weekend, Friday Night Photos
Always the weekend after Labor Day, we were lucky, the weather was great. The 4 wheelers from Bemidji made their second pilgrimage and, as usual, brought along their music. That's what the weekend is about! Friday night was their night and fun was had by all. Saturday most of the Jugband folks who were camping out at the beach came in. The jamming was good, great music with most of the gang, Bill and Judy, Marshall, Aaron, Chris, Randy, Kris and Al, Jim, Audrey and the rest.
These were the best nights of the summer, finally. Lots of good food on the beach and good music at both ends. Sunday was warm, and 6 bands performed to a full house under the big top tent at the Neighborhood. The family group from Bemidji, the La Di Das, featuring the Andersons, with former Effie guy Mark, were this year's winner, the competition was stiff. Someone had to win, any one of the bands could have won. The fighting is firce for the coveted fish scaler and the privelegde of having the winning name on the plaque, of course at the expense of the winners. If you missed this year, come on out for next year's. The music is worth it!

Labor Day, Feels Like Summer, Finally
The weather sucked until mid August, and then summer arrived. The Duitsmans continued to build their new digs on Lorraine Lake even after Marc fell twelve feet off a ladder, breaking 4 ribs and a collarbone. Labor Day weekend was busy, best holiday weather of the season. On Sunday, the Deer Lake Football Pool drawing took place. As usual, Marshall showed up at 5 and everyone pulled teams. Kara and Audrey were less than pleased with their picks, but life is hard. Some ladies staying at Stimacs' place showed up and everyone was amused! Judy Larson and friend Cindy came up for the fishing. And some Supers also came to enjoy the greatest weather on the planet. There were also lots of ATV groups, locals and vacationers to mark the semi-official end to the summer. Also had a lot of dogs, no the place is NOT going to the dogs! The days are noticeably shorter, but the water is the warmest it's been all summer. Swimming is now in order. Still having fun! Still open, drop on in.

The Darndest Things Show up at the Corner
On August 8 the Deer Lake Watershed held its annual potluck and meeting at DLC's. It was a good turn-out and the food, as usual, was great. Then a little after 7, a black truck with a strange blow-up showed up! What the...oh it was Claire Purcell's bachlorette party. Lots of women accompanied her on the tour of the northwoods bars. And a stretch limo from Hibbing chauffeured them on their travels. Oh course the corner was the first stop! The limo driver reported that he was delayed due to 2 moose standing on highway 1, a very unusual sighting. This week summer finally arrived with temps in the high eighties and the humidity up there too. Water is warm, swimming is not painful and the livin' is easy. Perseid meteor shower was pretty good on the 12th and it was warm enough to sit and gaze on the dock. The Duitsman brothers have returned and are hard at work building their cabin on Lorraine Lake.

Let the Good Times Roll
Pictures are worth all the words. We can't guarantee the weather, but we sure have some good times, and Saturday, August 1 was just that. Jeffrey Clarke, the one man wonder band played to the packed house. Many locals and several others were dancing, drinking, stomping and playing. The upstairs flea market was open again and the kids just love the treasure hunting. This was Jeff's last up north performance for 2009, but he'll be back, count on it! The Blackmer clan was out in full force, and that added to fun. Debbie, Loey, Val, Rick, Gail, Larry, and Charlie actually stood still long enough for a picture! Krissi, Jeremy and Morey drove in from Bemedji to hear the music and braved the wet cold nights out at Larson Lake. The Clarke clan was many strong, Wayne, Jeff's cousin and his whole tribe got in from Illinois. Galen and Sheila came on down and the list goes on. The pictures say it all! Leave comments, we love hearing from all you folks, you may not be here in the flesh, but you all are with us in spirit!

Rodeo Daze 2009
Missed the big action out at the grounds this year, but things were hopping in Effie at the Neighborhood Tavern. Thursday night Jeff Clarke, the singing cowboy, played. Lots of folks turned out to enjoy and dance. Marshall looked happy so it must have been a good night. Friday the rodeo started. The small town of Effie was crowded with cowboys and cowgirls and all the stuff they bring with them. Whiskey Johnson and his band played into the wee hours of the morning, then, rumor has it they played the rodeo grounds until 6 am. Rodeo was fun, crowded and no too hot. A few sprinkles fell, kept the dust and bugs down a bit. Saturday evening was the ever growing Effie parade with lots of fun floats. And the band played on and on. The crowd was dancing to the music, again to the wee hours of the morning. DLC was shut down for the evening, Gail and Charlie were on floats in the parade. And Gail ended up working at Marshall's on her "night off". Things were hopping under the big top in Effie! Rodeo ended Sunday afternoon, the weather was great, lots of "cowfolks" hung around. Back at DLC, lots of bikers passed through for a beer, enjoying the good biking weather. Next week, Jeffrey Clarke plays the dome, live again. The music starts about 8 pm so put on your dancing shoes and come on out!
